Head and Neck surgeon, Dr. Ian Kalnins and his wife Ildi, established this boutique vineyard in 1999. It is one of the smallest in Pokolbin, the famous wine growing region of the Hunter Valley, Australia. The site was carefully chosen for its red loam over clay and limestone base soil, which is ideal for shiraz. In 2004 some of our mature shiraz vines were grafted over to produce chardonnay and viognier grapes.
People often ask why we named our vineyard Ghost Riders. Well, it took us two years to come up with the name and it was the culmination of three factors:
- We definitely wanted the name to be connected with horses as our much loved horses live on the estate.
- We have always loved the Country and Western song “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and its haunting lyrics.
- Also we have always been interested in Western movies and Legends of the old West and Australian Outback, especially the Legend of the Ghost Rider. The idea of the original Ghost Rider was conceived in 1949 and there have been several variations since then. The first Ghost Rider was a cowboy who rode a horse, he wore a hat and a mask. It was only in the 1970s that the Ghost Rider rode a mechanical horse, a motorbike.
Ghost Riders Vineyard is
part of the Hermitage Hideaway Estate which offers lovely self contained
accommodation for up to 16 guests.
"Some who have stayed
on the vineyard estate have claimed that in the dead of the night they
have heard the distant thunder of galloping hooves. And were those eerie,
mournful cries made by man or beast, or were they just the wailing of
the wind?"
